Shopify Sales Tax Report: Export and Filing Guide (2026)

As of 2026-07-26, a US store using Shopify Tax can open the United States sales tax report in Analytics → Reports, drill from state to jurisdiction to transaction detail, and export every row — but each export from that report can cover only one month. The report is filing workpaper, not proof that Shopify filed the return. Unless you use Shopify Tax automated filing or a marketplace channel is marked as filing on your behalf, the merchant still prepares and submits the state return.

How to get a Shopify sales tax report

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Analytics → Reports.
  2. Filter the report list to Finances, then open United States sales tax. Shopify says this report is available only when the store is based in the United States, uses Shopify Tax, and uses USD.
  3. Choose the filing period. Start at the country view, select a state for its jurisdiction breakdown, and then open transaction detail when you need order-level support.
  4. Select Export. The on-screen report displays at most 1,000 rows; a CSV export contains the complete result for the selected period. The US sales tax report limits each CSV to one month, so quarterly filers need three monthly exports.

If the United States sales tax report is not available, use the legacy Taxes finance report. Shopify also directs merchants to that report for tax data from before July 1, 2024.

Reconcile five fields before you file

  1. Filing period. Match the report's start and end dates to the state return. For a quarterly return, combine the three one-month US sales tax exports without duplicating rows.
  2. Gross and net sales. Tie the state total to Total sales by order. Net sales remove discounts and returns; shipping and taxes are separate fields.
  3. Exempt and non-taxable sales. Preserve Shopify's exempt and non-taxable amounts as separate workpaper columns. A state return may ask for gross sales first and then deductions.
  4. Filed by channel. In transaction detail, split Filed, Not Filed, and Unspecified. Filed means a marketplace channel is responsible for filing that tax; Unspecified needs manual review. Do not send the same collected tax twice.
  5. Refund method. Shopify reduces tax when a refund is tied to a line item. A custom refund amount is not tied to a tax line, so the associated tax can remain in the report and needs review before filing.

Worked example: separate sales from tax responsibility

Suppose a state report shows $30,000 of net sales: $25,000 from your Online Store and $5,000 from a marketplace channel. Transaction detail marks the marketplace rows Filed and the storefront rows Not Filed. Your return workpaper should keep all $30,000 available for the state's gross-sales question, identify the $5,000 as marketplace-facilitated when the return provides that deduction, and reconcile the tax you must remit to the $25,000 direct channel. The state's own return instructions control whether facilitated sales are reported as gross sales, a deduction, or not at all.

This is why a single tax-total number is not enough. The channel, filing-responsibility, exemption, and refund columns explain who owes which amount. If you are unsure whether Shopify or your store is the filing party, read Does Shopify collect sales tax for you?

Shopify sales tax report FAQ

How do I export a Shopify sales tax report? Go to Analytics → Reports, open United States sales tax, select the period, then choose Export. Use one CSV per month and combine the files for a quarterly return.

Which Shopify report should I use for a sales tax return? Use the jurisdiction view to prepare state and local return lines, detailed transactions to support the numbers, and Total sales by order to reconcile the report to your books.

Does Shopify's tax report file the return? No. The report supplies data. Shopify files only when you use its automated filing service or when a channel is explicitly marked as filing the transaction on your behalf.

Why can't I see third-party marketplace orders? Shopify excludes them from the detailed transaction view by default. Change the report filter, then use the Filed by channel field to keep marketplace-filed tax separate from merchant-filed tax.
